Professional Background
A philanthropy professional since 1979, holding senior fundraising positions in higher education, health care and long term care. Active member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, with service on the national Board of Directors and Research Council; past president of the Greater Cleveland Chapter; frequent presenter at AFP’s annual International Conference and regional and chapter conferences; frequent contributor to the “Management File” column in Advancing Philanthropy. Author of the fundraising chapter in the Jossey-Bass Handbook of Nonprofit Leadership and Management.

- How long have you been teaching this course?: Since 2003.
- What is your teaching philosophy? It is my responsibility to create the circumstances and provide the guidance that enables students to learn. This includes maximizing the course structure and content. It also involves the encouragement of critical thinking about fundraising practices and their application to specific situations.
- What is your mission in teaching this course?: From the perspective of fundraising management: Major gifts are the crux of well established and enduring fundraising programs. They are essential to sustaining meaningful philanthropic support for any nonprofit. From the donor perspective: Major gifts and planned gifts provide opportunities for individuals to participate meaningfully in the values and vision of nonprofits; doing so enables them to practice a form of citizenship that is vital to our democratic society.
